Safe driving for life

L-Plates and P-Plates

Just Driving
As a learner, you have to remember your legal obligations when you are on the road. As well as having to be accompanied by a qualified driver, you are also required to display L-plates on your vehicle. These are made up of a white square containing a red ‘L’. They are usually attached to both the front and rear of the car, so that all other road users are made aware that you are not yet an experienced driver.

P-plates are similar to L-plates, but their purpose is to alert other road users to the fact that you are a newly-passed driver. These are not a legal requirement, but are very useful when new drivers are still getting used to busier roads or heavy traffic. The green ‘P’ on a square white background stands for ‘passed’, and reminds other drivers to give you that extra little bit of space that you may need when you’ve just passed your test.
