What Isn't Taught on Driving Lessons Manchester: Motorway Driving

There are some driving situations that aren't taught on your driving lessons such as motorway driving as it isn't included on the driving syllabus and not assessed on the driving test. Have no fear! Here are some great motorway driving tips to make sure you drive safely on the motorway.

All national motorway speed limits are 70 miles per hour unless specified otherwise. A situation where the speed limit is likely to differ is if road works are in progress or if the weather conditions are particularly bad. A national speed limit for a specified area, such as a motorway, is displayed on a white circle sign with a thick black line diagonally down it. You will have seen them on your driving lessons as they aren't just used to specify motorway speed limits but also dual carriage ways and sometimes a normal road.

Before entering onto a motorway you must use slip roads. Slip roads are taught on your driving lessons in Manchester so you should know the correct procedure to use them, however as motorway traffic moves very fast the blind spot check as you enter onto the road is even more important. Don't worry too much about slip roads on a motorway as they’re very similar to ones you will have practiced previously so stay confident, plan and scan far enough in front to enter and you will have no trouble.

When exiting a motorway you have signs to tell you how far away you are from the exit. These are measured in yards and the first one is a 300 yard marker with 3 strikes on, the second 200 with 2 strikes on and the last a 100 marker. You should check your centre mirror on the 300 mark, the wing mirror on the side you are exiting from at the 200 yard marker, and indicate at the 100 yard marker.

On a motorway you should only ever check your mirrors one at a time as checking in pairs gives you enough time to sway out of your lane or for traffic to slow down in front. This happens due to the pace of the traffic and it can stop just as quickly as it’s travelling as you may have seen before on your driving lessons Manchester.

Although motorway driving isn't included on your driving lessons in Manchester you can take a pass plus course which teaches you the rules or read our hints and tips to teach you the conduct of the motorway.
