What Isn't Taught on Driving Lessons Manchester: Country Driving
Country driving isn't something that is included on the driving syllabus and therefore you probably won't be taught it unless you live in a rural area with lots of countryside roads around. New drivers try to seek out useful hints and tips for when driving in the countryside so here they are!
First, country roads are usually quite acute, sharp turns so making sure you don't accelerate around corners too fast for a number of reasons. Firstly going around the corner too fast could cause you to lose control of the car and crash which is what no one wants to do! Another reason is that there may be wild animals, pedestrians or cyclists around the corner as country roads don't usually have paths, and finally there may be a queue of traffic around the corner which isn't visible until you have collided into the back of them!
A good rule to use when driving, especially on country roads, to avoid collisions is to ask yourself if you can stop in the visible distance you have ahead of you; If you can't then you're travelling too fast, simple! Stick by this rule and you will be accident free on the roads, well, at least the ones where the liability lies with you!
A typical country road usually has no street lamps and therefore your headlights become very important for light. You can use your full beam to increase visibility, however make sure you don't use them if you're following a vehicle or approaching a vehicle in the opposite direction. Whilst they may increase your visibility they will dramatically decrease others and have been known to cause accidents in extreme cases.
Country side roads are thinner than regular roads and so lane discipline is more important than ever. Try to keep as far to the left as possible without going off the road and this gives the person travelling in the opposite direction a margin for error, even though they shouldn't need it! You are taught this on your driving lessons in Manchester as your normal road position but this becomes more important when driving on country roads.
If you want practice on country roads you can ask to cover them on your driving lessons Manchester, or you can take the pass plus course which includes country side driving as one of its six modules. These tips are very helpful but nothing is more valuable than experience on your driving lessons, taking a pass plus course makes new drivers safer on the roads and is recommended to all new drivers.
