Why Can't I Understand Rounabouts?
Many pupils ask this same question on their driving lessons, but it isn’t a simple answer. Many people struggle to understand roundabouts as the general rule isn’t always the case and this can confuse inexperienced drivers.
The general rule for a roundabout is that you position yourself left if you want to take an exit classed as left or straight on the roundabout sign, or right if you want to take any exit classed as right.
This can become very tricky as most struggle to judge what straight on is. The better way to understand a roundabout is to imagine the roundabout sign as a clock. If the exit is 12 o'clock or before on the sign then you position yourself left, and if it’s beyond you position yourself right.
What do pupils find so complex about this you say? It’s not this situation that they find difficult, it’s when the general rule is changed by lane controlled roundabouts. This is when they become very complex and a pupil shouldn't worry if they struggle.
Don’t get caught up on trying to understand roundabouts as soon as you start to learn them, just take your time and you will begin to pick up what you have to do. For most this can take many hours of tuition, on both roundabout and just generally driving around to gain experience.
Complex roundabouts and situations is a very advanced driving skill and your driving schools in Leeds will tell you that you shouldn’t be doing this unless you're at a high level of driving. It’s one of the last things you do before booking your test, and if your instructor is moving you on too soon you won't understand or be able to comprehend them!

Do your reading outside of lessons and drive as a passenger to complex situation trying to understand which lane you need to be in, where you position the vehicle to take which exit and why.
