Making your vehicle road worthy- the documentation

When you buy a vehicle there are a number of different things you must have before your vehicle is road worthy. Making sure you have the correct documentation for your vehicle is important and there are a number of things you should have in paper before you can get on the road.

First, your car must have a valid MOT before you can legally drive it on the road. An MOT inspects all the safety features in a car and assess if it would be a danger when on the road to yourself or other vehicles. Once your vehicle has passed its MOT you will then receive an MOT pass certificate document. Make sure that you keep this as you will need it to tax your vehicle; in addition it is an important document that you will need to keep as proof that the vehicle has had an MOT.

If you find yourself in a position where your vehicle has been off the road for a number of months and both the MOT and road tax has expired you won't be able to tax your vehicle until it has had an MOT, yet you can't drive it to the MOT garage as there is no tax on the car. The DVLA have stated that you're legally allowed to drive you car without road tax to an MOT appointment but your car must be insured.

Insurance is the next thing you need to think about getting to make your car road worthy. Insurance is made compulsory as it ensures that if you do have an accident on the road you're able to pay for the damages through your insurance company. You should always carry a copy of your insurance policy around as you may need it to prove to the police that you have a valid insurance on your car. You may also need it to hand out your details to the other driver if you're involved in an accident that is your fault.

Once you have a valid MOT and insurance document you can then present these to get your vehicle taxed. Vehicles fall into different tax bracket, depending on how much C02 your car emits depends on where it the tax bracket your car sits. You must present both your MOT and insurance documents when buying your tax disc and you can normally do this at your local post office.
