Having Your First M.O.T and Making Sure Your Driving Instructors Car Has An M.O.T
An MOT makes sure that when you are driving any vehicles on the road they are roadworthy.
This goes for driving schools vehicles as well as any other vehicle on the road so rest assured if you are taking driving lessons in Leeds or wherever you live you are entitled to ask your driving instructors to show you a valid certificate if for any reason you want to see one.
If for any reason your driving instructors refuse to show you a valid M.O.T certificate it could be they might not have one. Not all of them will carry it around with them but it should not take long before which ever driving instructors you are learning to drive with are able to produce this for you.
The M.O.T will prove the car is not dangerous due to faulty parts on the car. When having an M.O.T the testers check to see if the vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. If you buy a brand new car the first M.O.T is required three years on from the date of first registration, this differs for vehicles used for public transport, for example taxi’s.
Your car requires a ministry of transport certificate (M.O.T certificate) to be able to drive on the road. This confirms that at the time of the test the vehicle met the acceptable environmental and road safety standards required.
The certificate doesn’t mean that it is roadworthy for the amount of time it is valid. What it does mean is at the time the vehicle is tested and only that time the vehicle is roadworthy.
You will still have to keep an eye on the vehicle throughout the whole year that the M.O.T is on the vehicle. This would be the expiry date from when the M.O.T was first issued. Also the M.O.T doesn’t guarantee the general mechanics of the car is all fully functional. The M.O.T doesn’t check the engine, gearbox and clutch.
Some drivers are not sure what the M.O.T test includes, the test includes a variety of different things:
• The body and vehicle structure, the M.O.T tester will check for any extreme corrosion or damage in certain areas, as well as no sharp areas that may cause injury to any other road users while you may be driving the vehicle or if it is stood still. When a vehicle is stood still it can still cause injury if sharp objects are protruding from the vehicle at some point.
• The fuel system, the tester that is responsible for the M.O.T will need to make certain there are no fuel leaks and that the fuel cap fastens on securely. In the event that there could be a fuel leak the car will need immediate attention. Fuel is highly flammable the tester will be particularly keen for any major issues relating to fuel leaks.
• The exhaust emissions will also need to meet vehicle the exhaust emission requirements depending on what age and fuel type the vehicle is. The environment is getting worse by the day and by keeping your emissions as low as possible this will assist in keeping the environment as clean and safe as possible.
• The seat belts front drivers side also the front passengers side and how ever many seat belts that are installed in the back will need the lock properly in the clasp that is fitted in the vehicle and also release properly in case anyone would need to exit the vehicle in an emergency. All of seat belts installed are checked to see if they are fit for their purpose intended for.
There are too many things to mention that the M.O.T tester would check for whilst carrying out an M.O.T. They will tell you what improvements if any need to be made in order to pass the M.O.T once all the checks have being completed.
You will either give the garage responsible for doing the M.O.T authorisation to carry out any repairs or go somewhere else if you want to be certain your quotation is fair from the M.O.T testing station to make the improvements needed to be able to obtain your pass certificate from the M.O.T tester to legally continue to drive on the road.
M.O.T certificates are proof the your car is roadworthy if for any reason you are pulled up by the police you could possibly get a producer this is because you may not have all your documents with you at the time you were stopped by the police.
When you do go the police station don't worry this is a routine procedure they will ask you for a few other documents like possibly your driving license, car insurance details along with your M.O.T certificate. There is nothing to be concerned about as long as you have a valid in date M.O.T certificate everything will be fine.
You are able to take your car in for the M.O.T one month before the expiry of your old M.O.T. If you do take your car in for an M.O.T early and if and when your car has passed an M.O.T you M.O.T tester will write your new certificate out from the date your old one expires.
The reason they do this is because it gives you the opportunity if there is any problems with your car to make it not roadworthy you would then have the time available to have any problems rectified without having to drive the car away without the M.O.T.
This would mean you would still be legal because the current M.O.T on your car would still be in date with having the window of that month prior to your current M.O.T running out.
