Top 10 Driving Test Blunders
Most are very nervous on the day of their driving test as it's such a big day. Here are the 10 most common driving test blunders that you need to avoid when on your driving test.
- Driving in the right hand lane without making progress- the best thing to do on a dual carriageway is to stick to the left hand lane when possible. There is no need to be in the right hand lane and you would only be expected to make progress over other vehicles on an advanced driving test. If you are behind a particular slow vehicle then just let it be, keep your 2 second gap and travel behind them.
- Ineffective observations at junctions- this refers to all junctions, but in particular where you have another junction in front of you and in effect you have a cross-road with give way lines. Examiners want to see pupils clearly looking left right and straight forward!
- Ineffective observations when performing manoeuvres- when performing a turn in the road, a reverse around the corner or a parallel park the examiners expect you to do a full observation around your whole car about every three to four seconds, and if you go a while without doing this check it can be a minor or even a serious fault.
- Stalling the car in dangerous places- stalling the car on a roundabout or whilst turning is seen as dangerous and will almost certainly be a fail. It is very common for pupils to forget to change gear when under pressure and that is why this is number four in our top 10 blunders.
- Incorrect or late signalling- During your driving lessons in Birmingham you would have been taught how to signal correctly, however the pressure of your driving test can make this very foggy hence why it is number five!
- Unmarked crossroads- unmarked crossroads are like the silent assassins when it comes to failing a driving test. On test routes they usually throw in an unmarked crossroad which means no one has right of way. If you continue through a cross road without stopping and looking you will fail instantly, so beware!
- Failing to check blind spots- checking your blind spot is an essential safety check for most road procedures. Failing to do this is very dangerous and can amount to a fail!
- Failing to plan and scan- looking ahead whilst driving and anticipating what is coming next is important. This is a vital part to driving and you have to read the dangers in front that may cause you to slow down or change direction and pupils that don't do this usually fail their driving test.
- Harsh braking- braking harshly and last-minute isn't something that examiners like to see as it's dangerous and shows ineffective scanning and planning as mentioned above.
- Incorrect gear selection- although you wont fail on this the first time you will probably incur a minor fault and 3 of the same minor faults sum up to a serious which you will fail with.
Now you know the top 10 driving test blunders you can avoid doing these on your driving lessons Birmingham to get in good practice for your test.
