What to do if your vehicle has being cloned written by our Driving Instructors in York

What should I do if I have finished my driving lessons, I have bought my own car but I am receiving fines or charges through the post which I am not responsible for?

It is possible that if you are receiving fines or charges for issues that you didn’t commit yourself, your registration mark has been cloned and is been used by another road user. To clone a car is to copy the identity of a similar vehicle, that is not stolen, but already on the road. Criminals find an exact match to the car they want to clone and get fake licence plates fitted, so the person responsible for the real car gets all the fines and charges from the fake one.

If you think that this has happened to you then the following points will help you avoid becoming a victim of further crime.
Firstly you must return the fines and charges to the issuing authorises as well as any documents that may be eligible as evidence to support your case that your car has been cloned. You may find this difficult if you aren’t the first owner of the car but you should be able to find something to back you up.

Secondly you must right to the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) who are located in Swansea, SA99 1ZA or you can fax them your letter on 01792 783 083, from here they will record your correspondence on the vehicle record in case there are any future charges taken out on your vehicle.

The final stage when you have cleared your name is to contact the police and report that your vehicle been cloned. It is then their job to catch and prosecute the guilty party in order to prevent the activity escalating or continuing which creates more hassle for you.

You may be thinking to yourself well what happens after I have done all of this? Well the DVLA will be happy to give you a new registration number if they are sure that your vehicle has been cloned to stop any further charges been issued to you.
If you are finding it hard to find evidence that your vehicle has been cloned, acceptable evidence would be things such as applications to register your car and licence from someone other than the registered vehicle keeper.
