Renewing your driving licence at the age of 70 or over

Renewing your driving licence will need to be done when you get to the age of 70.

If you obtained your licence at the age of 20 and you are now 70, the chances are that you are going to look different so you must renew your licence just in case anyone questions whether it is you or not on your driving licence.

You can renew your licence under a number of different conditions:

  • Firstly, if you have a British licence that is 90 days within expiring you must get a new one (it’s usually around the age of 70 when it expires).
  • If you are a Great British resident and wish to update something on your licence, for example a photo.
  • Whenever you are renewing your driving licence you must pass the minimum eyesight requirement, on your driving lessons in York, your driving instructors will usually test this by making you read a new licence plate from 20 meters away. This will have being a long time ago if you are thinking of renewing your licence now your eyesight can deteriate over time this will need checking now.
  • Also you can’t be banned from driving when you decide to renew your licence, whether you have been banned for medical reasons or for driving offences.
  • You must also have a valid form of identity if you are replacing the paper part of your licence, for example a UK passport.
  • You must also be able to provide addresses of where you have lived for the past 3 years including your current one. This is important to the DVLA in case any charges or fines have to be sent out.

There are a number of different ways of renewing your driving licence, either online which is the easiest way, or by the post.

In order to renew your licence online just visit the Direct Gov website and follow the instructions you are given. If you do decide to renew your licence online make sure you have at hand your driving licence that you wish to renew, your UK passport (if you have one) and details of your previous address for the past 3 years, as mentioned above.

Please note that you can’t renew your C1 or D1 driving licence which is for medium size vehicles and minibuses, this must be done by postal services.
