Cruise control explained by our Driving Schools York

Cruise control allows you to accelerate or decelerate your car without having to press the pedals, this makes it a lot easier to drive long distances for those drivers who have lead in the end of their shoes. It will save you a lot of money in speeding tickets and can be a very useful feature. It is more commonly found in American cars rather than European cars, because of the long distances and open roads they travel on.

However basic cruise control is becoming less useful because of the amount of increasing traffic on the road, instead of just becoming obsolete, before long cruise control will adapt to be able to follow the car in front of you whilst maintaining a safe distance.

The cruise control works like a small computer usually located under the bonnet or behind the dashboard. It is hooked up to the throttle on the accelerator so it can slowly increase the throttle right down to 1mph to give you maximum control over the speed you maintain. Obviously it is a little more complicated than just connecting it to the throttle but you get the idea.

A good cruise control system will accelerate rapidly and will not overshoot the speed, and it should do this no matter the weight of your car or whether you are on a hill or not.

Enough about how the old system works and see what new cruise control can do. There are currently two companies developing a more advanced cruise control system, it is called the adaptive cruise control, and it involves a radar been placed in the front grill of the car. This radar detects cars in front of you in your lane and automatically alters speed depending on how far is needed to maintain a safe distance from the car in front.

This is brand new technology and is only in the developing stages but you will see this technology slowly creep in so keep your eyes open for it! I hope that this article has clued you up a bit more on cruise control and hope you use it safely!
