Applying for a provisional driving licence

One of the first things you will need to do before you begin your driving lessons is to apply for a provisional driving licence.

What will my provisional driving licence entitle me to do?
This document will entitle you to drive a car prior to passing your test, but only whilst accompanied by a fully licensed passenger. It therefore enables you to get behind a wheel and practice your driving under supervision and to start taking professional driving lessons legally.

Applying for a provisional driving licence online
You can apply for a provisional licence quickly and easily through the DVLA (Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency) online for just £45, as long as you meet the pre-requisites outlined on the following page:
www.direct.gov.uk/provisional

Applying in person or by post
If you prefer, it is also possible to apply for your provisional licence in person or by post, by just filling out a D1 application form. These are available from most post offices, or from the DVLA online ordering service:
www.dvla.gov.uk/forms
